Dongara Historic Walk
For a delightful encounter with Dongara's historic history is what awaits when you embark on the Heritage Walk, a 4km stroll that showcases 28 cherished buildings steeped in history. Start from the Old Police Station, conveniently located within the Visitor Centre. Noteworthy attractions encompass the Royal Flour Mill, dating back to 1894, the venerable Priory Lodge, and the Old Police Station, an architectural gem constructed in 1870. And of course the enchanting Russ Cottage.
In the year 1853, a youthful Titus Russ, accompanied by his family, graced the colony's shores at a tender age of 12. His sojourn in Dongara commenced around 1860, eventually leading to his union with Caroline Smith Wintle. By settling on land belonging to his employer, the esteemed Edward Hamersley, a partner in The Cattle Company, Russ made a home for himself. With unyielding determination, he painstakingly erected the cottage between the years 1868 and 1870, astonishingly utilising a wheelbarrow to transport limestone of more than 50 tonnes from a distance of 500m. A testament to the Russ family's lineage, this abode remained their cherished sanctuary until the year 1960.
Adorned with meticulous restoration, Russ Cottage now serves as a window into the captivating existence of early settlers during the 1860s.
